Porsche 964 Carrera RSR 3.8

An icon of international GT racing in the 1990s:

The Porsche 964 Carrera RSR 3.8 with chassis number WP0ZZZ96ZPS496094 is one of the most exclusive and sought-after air-cooled 911s ever built. Only 51 examples of this uncompromisingly designed factory racing car were ever built, each one constructed for professional competition use and closely linked to the Porsche motorsport program of the time.

This vehicle was delivered to Ernst Palmberger on January 14, 1994, with C00 country specifications (Germany). The RSR was ordered in the special color X4 Speed Yellow, combined with a black interior in imitation leather (equipment code 87). The left-hand racing bucket seat is black and upholstered in black STO fabric.

The Porsche 964 RSR is powered by a 3.8-liter M64/04 boxer engine coupled with a G50/10 five-speed manual transmission. The engine currently installed is an original 3.8 RSR replacement engine. It is no longer the engine installed at delivery with the engine number 62P85649, but a correct and original RSR 3.8 engine in accordance with factory specifications.

This model was delivered ex works in the Carrera RSR 3.8 (M005) racing version and fitted with Pirelli tires (M050). The 40/40 limited-slip differential (M220) ensures optimum traction under competitive conditions. The 18-inch RS Cup wheels (M406) in combination with the wide body version (M491) characterize the powerful appearance of the vehicle. The five-speed manual transmission (M481) works in conjunction with non-power steering (M656) to provide an immediate, unadulterated driving experience.

The interior features the original leather steering wheel (M433) and the left-hand racing bucket seat (M388). In keeping with its consistent racing design, the vehicle was configured without driver and passenger airbags (M564). For long-distance use, the RSR was equipped with a large 120-liter fuel tank (M546). The equipment was supplemented on delivery by a jack system, central locking, the handbrake system of the RS 3.8, and a special ADAC GT exhaust system.

It is particularly noteworthy that this 964 RSR 3.8 is still equipped with its original ABS-5 braking system. This racing ABS was produced exclusively in quantities corresponding to the number of vehicles built. Accordingly, a fully preserved original ABS-5 system is extremely rare today.

The history of the vehicle is closely linked to Ernst Palmberger's motorsport career. In the 1994 season, he competed for Mühlbauer Motorsport in the BPR series, initially with an RSR 3.8 body. For the 1995 ADAC GT Cup, Palmberger finally activated his personally ordered vehicle with the chassis number PS496094.

A special exception is the fact that this model was ordered with full road approval. It received individual approval from the TÜV, a German vehicle registration document, and an official vehicle passport. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only Porsche 964 RSR 3.8 in the world with official German road approval, which is an extraordinary feature for a purebred factory racing car.

Until its subsequent restoration, the vehicle had only been driven 4,116 kilometers. Since the completion of the comprehensive and professionally executed restoration, only test drives and short trips have been made to keep the technology in perfect condition. This exceptionally low mileage further underscores the rarity of this RSR.

From 1997 onwards, the vehicle was used in the Porsche Supercup and later converted to Turbo S LM specifications. As part of this process, the engine was fitted with a supercharger. This was followed by further appearances in hill climbs and club sport events.

A few years ago, the vehicle was inspected by renowned Porsche expert Jochen Bader, who confirmed its authenticity. Today, this 964 Carrera RSR 3.8 is in excellent condition, with a consistent history and extremely low mileage.

The chassis number WP0ZZZ96ZPS496094 combines documented racing history, original racing technology including the rare ABS-5 system, confirmed authenticity, and the globally unique combination of a factory racing car and official German road approval. A collector's vehicle of exceptional standing and a rare opportunity in the market for significant air-cooled Porsche racing models.
